Google Chrome is one of the most widely used desktop browsers. Like Microsoft Edge, it is built on the open-source Chromium engine, so many sites behave the same in both browsers. Chrome is especially known for speed, a simple interface, and the large Chrome Web Store catalog of extensions.
Installing and opening Chrome
- If Chrome is not installed, download it from Google’s official page (
google.com/chrome) and run the installer. Avoid third-party download sites. - After installation, pin Chrome to the taskbar from the Start menu if you use it daily.
- Open the Start menu, type
Chrome, and pressEnter.
Omnibox, search, and navigation
- The combined address and search field is often called the omnibox. Type a URL or search terms, then press
Enter. The default search engine (usually Google) handles queries. - Use Back / Forward to move through history in the current tab.
Ctrl + RorF5reloads the page;Ctrl + Shift + Rperforms a harder reload that bypasses some cached files (useful when a site looks “stuck”).Ctrl+click or middle-click a link opens it in a new tab.
Tabs and windows
Ctrl + T— new tab ·Ctrl + W— close tab ·Ctrl + Shift + T— reopen closed tab.Ctrl + Tab/Ctrl + Shift + Tab— cycle tabs ·Ctrl + N— new window.Ctrl + Shift + Nopens a new Incognito window (private browsing on this device only—not invisible to networks or websites you sign into).
Bookmarks, downloads, and clearing data
- Click the star in the omnibox to bookmark a page. Open Bookmark Manager from the ⋮ menu or with
Ctrl + Shift + O. Ctrl + Jopens the Downloads page. Under Settings > Downloads, set the default folder and whether to ask where to save each file.- To free space or fix login issues, use Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data. Choose a time range and which items (history, cookies, cached images, etc.) to remove.
Profiles and Google sign-in
- Your profile icon (top right) separates work, school, and personal browsing. Add a profile to keep bookmarks and extensions apart.
- Signing in with a Google account (optional) can sync bookmarks, passwords, history, and extensions across your devices. Review sync options under Settings > You and Google.
Extensions, settings, and updates
- Open
chrome://extensionsto manage add-ons, or visit the Chrome Web Store. Install only extensions you recognize; malicious extensions can read page content or change behavior. - Key settings pages:
chrome://settings(general),chrome://settings/security(Safe Browsing and HTTPS preferences). - Chrome updates automatically in the background. To check manually: ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome.
- To set Chrome as the default browser on Windows, use Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps and assign HTTP/HTTPS (and sometimes
.htm/.html) to Chrome.
Chrome and Edge
Because both browsers share Chromium, shortcuts and many features overlap. You can use either—or both—for different profiles or tasks. If a site works in one but not the other, try disabling extensions or clearing cache before assuming the site is broken.
